- contiunation of the history....
Although Eric enjoyed S/G racing in the NHRA and the Southeast Super Gas
Association, and was very successful, he still wanted to go faster and
make more horsepower. After the east coast swing of the NHRA tour was
over, Eric would change the set-up on his car and enter the Super Quick
and MOPAR Quick 16 races to go fast and demonstrate his Shelton horsepower.
Other racers noticed and began requesting Shelton engines too.
The 1998 MOPAR nationals in Columbus, Oh., found Eric being the number
1 qualifier in the Q-16 with his new FBS head engine. After that, an opportunity
surfaced for Eric to build the first NRC Covalt 32-valve big block Chrysler
which enabled him to experience new engine development first hand. Eric's
determination to develop more horsepower and speed have taken him to his
current project, the NHRA Pro Stock Competition. Delivery of a 1999 Jerry
Haas Dodge Avenger took place recently and Eric has been building a team
to compete later this season and to compete competitively in the 2003
season. Licensing and testing is in progress and Eric will be assisting
Tompkins Motorsports Pro Stock Truck team this year to gain NHRA professional
experience while preparing for next season.
"The sky is the limit. Hard work and determination can make
your dreams and goals come true."
The
seeds for Shelton Racing Enterprises were planted in the early 1970's
during the apex of the muscle car era. Having grown up in Washington,
D.C., a mecca of hot-rodding and drag racing, Eric began wrenching at
the age of 15. Summer jobs at Douglas Speed Sport Center, in Silver Spring
Md., funded his first engine project at the age of 17. Eric completed
the big block Mopar in his 1969 Roadrunner just in time to drive it to
Atlanta to attend college and to begin his collegiate football career.
